Hippomancy
𝐇𝐈𝐏𝐏𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐘
My Triple Oracle of Horses : Past Present & Future, or Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds, adorned with Fire Poppies
𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃/𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐏𝐈𝐄𝐂𝐄 :
Hippomancy is the art of divination through horses - be it their movements, sounds, or bones - & was said to be practiced by a few ancient cultures, including the Persians. With horses representing divinity & light, they were often associated with Ahura Mazda - the one creator or highest god of Zoroastrianism (the first monotheistic religion of record - thought to date back as early as 1000-600 BCE among Persians long before the Islamic conquest) Perhaps because of this association between Horses & Ahura Mazda, horses were employed to choose or validate royal legitimacy/throne ascension, and show paths forward, serving as representations of divine wisdom.
Fire Poppies bedeck my horse oracles - flowers that are stirred to life in the wake of fires - the smoke signaling to the dormant seeds: Its time to awaken, let germination & regrowth rise from the ashes of destruction. Fire (and water) is also a core symbol of purity & light in Zoroastrianism, with Fire Temples (Atash Behrams) like that of Yazd in Iran existing to this day - keeping an eternal fire burning.
The confluence of the Year of the Fire Horse (in Chinese culture) my continued readings into Zoroastrianism (weaving the most ancient magical practices of my ancestors into my life) watching with a heavy heart as some of the most sacred, beautiful sites of Iran are damaged & lives lost…all of these roiling emotions brought to mind a Triple Oracle of Horses, strong & beautiful, noble, harbingers of hope amidst the blaze, each horse a reminders of one of the core belief of Zoroastrianism:
𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒
𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐒
𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐃𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐒
From this lifelong Irooni HorseGirl to you : May the deep, steady beating of these three horses’ hearts & hooves bring calm to your aching soul, may fire poppies like those entwined with & emerging from their manes grow from the charred soil of your pain.
12×18” print of original artwork by Kita (that’s me!) Printed (on thick, beautifully textured watercolor paper) and packed (in a biodegradable cellulose sleeve) by me, in my very own tiny Chicago studio surrounded by cats, plants & art alchemy. Story card about the art included.
